ThinkGeek partners with major gaming stores, celebrates with $10 coupon

As if ThinkGeek wasn’t the Tom Nook of nerdy online shopping already, today the web-based merchandise company announced a partnership with several gaming publishers’ official stores, including Bethesda, Eidos, Bioware, and Gearbox. The deal also includes the official web stores of Tomb Raider, Plants vs. Zombies, and Forza Motorsport.

If I had all of ThinkGeek’s money to spend on this sale, I’d be smiling too.

What does this mean to you? Glad you asked!

From now until 11:59pm ET 9/29/14, all of these newly allied stores will accept the coupon code “TIMMY” for $10 off an order of $20 or more. The code can be used as many times as you want, at as many of the partnered sites as you’d like, so now may be a great time to get in some early holiday shopping. The only exceptions to the promotion are pre-sale items, deposit items, and Bethesda’s discounted hoodies.

This coupon only works at the partnered sites, not at ThinkGeek itself.

Club Nintendo offers free 2-disc soundtrack for registering both versions of SSB

Are you the type of gamer that will buy multiple copies of the same game on different platforms, much to the bemusement of your peers? Well if you maintain the habit with the upcoming Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, you’ll at least get a reward this time.

SSBCDs

No details have been added yet to indicate a deadline for registration (especially since the Wii U version still doesn’t have a specific release date), but the website promises more information is soon to follow. For now, you can head over to the promotion site to listen to samples of the included music while you put both copies of the game on your holiday gift list.

Remember, kids: If your parents balk at buying the same game twice, just tell them you’ll be getting a third present from Santa Iwata, too!

santaiwata

Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll know what that means.

Sally Acorn plushie w/vest listed on eBay this morning

Princess Sally Acorn, one of Sonic’s original love interests, has long been one of the rarest and most highly-sought after characters in the world of Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise. Whether you love her or hate her, she can’t be ignored by a collector. Items resembling the royal squirrel… chipmunk…. rodenty-thing always draw a crowd — and extreme prices — whenever they do pop up.

If you did in fact just hear a popping noise, it was probably the sound of deep-walleted collectors flocking to their computers, because a plushie of Sally Acorn was listed on eBay this morning. According to the description details, the doll is one of the medium series (13” tall) and has minimal wear and tear, along with its original vest. The auction is opening at $100 AUD and will run throughout the rest of the week.

Sallyplush

Sally stared into the abyss, and the abyss looked back.

This item, like most Sally-related memorabilia, came from the Sega World amusement park in Sydney, Australia. Sally, along with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik, was one of the park’s mascots and subsequently had an extensive line of merchandise featuring her visage. Some items (usually clothing and accessories) nailed her design dead-on; others, such as most of the toys, diiiiiidn’t quite translate her well into three dimensions. Sally’s plushies are notoriously ugly, but nevertheless they remain hot targets for collectors.

In total, there are four varieties of Sally plush: Large, medium, small, and a plush hand puppet. All four types are extremely rare, but the largest of the group tends to pull the highest prices, if just on the basis that it’s a jumbo-size doll. Additionally, Sally’s plushies originally had her iconic blue vest, many of which have been lost over the years. Any plush that still retains its matching vest is considered even more rare, which incites even higher bids.

Luckily for you guys, I already have all four of these plushies, which is why I’m signal boosting this auction at all. The last time a Sally doll that still had its vest graced eBay, the winning bidder forked over $1,000 to claim their prize. Right now the plush in the listing isn’t that expensive (yes, $100 is cheap for a Sally doll), but who knows what’s going to happen at the end of the week. If this is a collectible you’ve been pining for and happen to have some excess money to kick around, now’s your chance while it’s available at all!

I do not own Sally Acorn or any other Sonic-related character, as they are all © Sega.

Although I do own several Sally plushies, I do not own the one that’s being auctioned off today; the listing is run by mychildrulz, whom I have bought several items from in the past, and each transaction was always pleasant.

ThinkGeek Holding Gamer-Themed Bogo Sale Through 3/23

Have you had your eye on that customizable portal gun replica and wanted a companion cube cookie jar to go with it, but thought it was more expensive than the organs and combined incomes of everyone in [SUBJECT HOMETOWN HERE]? Always wanted a Vault 101 jacket with matching shoes, but never had enough caps to foot the bill? Maybe now is your chance, because the ever-popular nerd culture store ThinkGeek is holding a buy-one-get-one-50%-off sale specifically on gaming merchandise for the weekend.

ThinkGeek

By using the promo code “HIGHSCORE,” buyers can cut the price of one item in half, provided it’s of equal or lesser value than its partner. As I just learned from my own purchase a few minutes ago, this discount can be applied to more than one pair of items — although it’s important to keep in mind the more expensive items will always be full-price and the cheaper ones will always be the ones discounted. ThinkGeek may be generous, but they’re not stupid.

The sale ends 3/23/14 at 11:59 PM, allowing gamers three days to dig through their couch cushions and cash in their pop cans so they can finally snag those zero-suit Samus statues and World of Warcraft bathrobes they’ve been hankering for.

Mario & Luigi Specialty WiiMotes Available Now: $40

To help round out the celebrations of The Year of Luigi, a special edition Weegee-themed Wii & Wii U remote is available for $39.99 as of today. Oh, and there’s one of some guy named Mario, too.

MarioLuigi-wiimotes

In addition to just plain looking swank, these remotes also give Club Nintendo members a reason to waste their points on those wrist straps that no one cares about.

The remotes come just in time for holiday shopping now that Halloween’s passed and Thanksgiving’s already being overlooked.

Nintendo-Refurbished 3DS Price Drop: $110

Since the release of Pokémon X/Y last Saturday, there have been two major events in the world of handheld gaming. One of them is that a large portion of gamers have dropped off the face of the earth as they fall into the latest monster-training rabbit hole, and the other is that we’ve all been deafened by the collective anguished shrieks of Pokémon fans that lack a 3DS.

3dspricedrop

You can’t catch ’em all unless you catch a 3DS first.

Well, banshees, scream no more! For a limited time, Nintendo has lowered the price on their refurbished 3DS stock to a mere $109.99, so long as you want blue or purple. If midnight blue is more your taste, you can get a DSi XL for even less. These are used 3DSes that have been personally inspected, tested, repaired (if necessary), and warrantied by Nintendo themselves. The consoles may have a few nicks and bumps here and there, but Nintendo guarantees they’ll work. It’s just like getting one new, except it’s not new at all. But it’s a lot cheaper. Just think of it as replacing the new car smell with the scent of fresh cash.

As noted, these are temporary price reductions, and there’s no indication on the website just how temporary it’ll be. If you need a cheap way to get your hands on Pokémon X/Y, now may be your chance!

The 3DS and Pokémon are © Nintendo. If you don’t believe me, the fans have probably erected a monument in their honor by now, so you could go there and see for yourself.
